Against that time, if ever that time come...
Sonnet 49Against that time, if ever that time come,
When I shall see thee frown on my defects, When as thy love hath cast his utmost sum, Call'd to that audit by advised respects; Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass And scarcely greet me with that sun thine eye, When love, converted from the thing it was, Shall reasons find of settled gravity,-- Against that time do I ensconce me here Within the knowledge of mine own desert, And this my hand against myself uprear, To guard the lawful reasons on thy part: To leave poor me thou hast the strength of laws, Since why to love I can allege no cause. |

To prepare for that future time (if that time ever comes) when I’ll see you frown at my shortcomings, when your love no longer shines on me because logic has finally caught up with him, for future times when you’ll pass me by with scarcely a glance from the sun of your eyes, when transmogrified love will wind sound reasons and pertinent arguments to cease to be; in preparation for that time, I’ll snuggle down here, in the knowledge of my own worth – and raise my hand against myself to uphold the very reasons you will give.
You have every reason to leave worthless me – seeing as I myself can’t find a single reason for you to love me.
