Betwixt mine eye and heart a league is took...
Sonnet 47Betwixt mine eye and heart a league is took,
And each doth good turns now unto the other: When that mine eye is famish'd for a look, Or heart in love with sighs himself doth smother, With my love's picture then my eye doth feast And to the painted banquet bids my heart; Another time mine eye is my heart's guest And in his thoughts of love doth share a part: So, either by thy picture or my love, Thyself away art present still with me; For thou not farther than my thoughts canst move, And I am still with them and they with thee; Or, if they sleep, thy picture in my sight Awakes my heart to heart's and eye's delight. |

[Continuing from the theme of the last sonnet]
My heart and eyes have now joined forces, and are doing each other favours.
When my eyes are starving for the sight of you, or my heart is stifling himself by sighing after you, my eyes feast on your picture instead, and call on my heart to share the food. At other times the roles are reversed, and the eyes share in the heart’s loving thoughts of you.
In this way, either via your picture or via my love for you, you’re always here with me, even if you’re supposedly absent. You can move no further than my thoughts of you - and seeing as I’m always with them (as they with me); or, failing that, if I can see your picture it rouses my heart, to the delight of both my heart and sight.
