Let me confess that we two must be twain...
Sonnet 36Let me confess that we two must be twain,
Although our undivided loves are one: So shall those blots that do with me remain Without thy help by me be borne alone. In our two loves there is but one respect, Though in our lives a separable spite, Which though it alter not love's sole effect, Yet doth it steal sweet hours from love's delight. I may not evermore acknowledge thee, Lest my bewailed guilt should do thee shame, Nor thou with public kindness honour me, Unless thou take that honour from thy name: But do not so; I love thee in such sort As, thou being mine, mine is thy good report. |

I’ll admit that we have to be apart, even though our love makes us a single unit. Our shames can stay with me: I’ll bear them all, you can go free. Though our love is single, reality separates us physically. This doesn’t alter the nature of our love, but it does mean we get to spend less time together.
I can’t always say ‘hi’ to you, because my known guilt would bring shame on you. In the same way you can’t honour me by acknowledging me publicly, unless you deduct that amount of honour from your own reputation.
Don’t do that, though. I love you in such a way, that because you’re mine, your good reputation is as important to me as my own.
