That you were once unkind befriends me now...
Sonnet 120That you were once unkind befriends me now,
And for that sorrow which I then did feel Needs must I under my transgression bow, Unless my nerves were brass or hammer'd steel. For if you were by my unkindness shaken As I by yours, you've pass'd a hell of time, And I, a tyrant, have no leisure taken To weigh how once I suffered in your crime. O, that our night of woe might have remember'd My deepest sense, how hard true sorrow hits, And soon to you, as you to me, then tender'd The humble salve which wounded bosoms fits! But that your trespass now becomes a fee; Mine ransoms yours, and yours must ransom me. |

(Continuing from last two sonnets)
I’m taking advantage of the fact that you cheated on me once. Because I know how much it hurts to be betrayed, I’d have to be inhuman not to feel sorry for what I’ve done. If you were as devastated by my unfaithfulness as I was by yours, you’ll have been through hell.
I never stopped to think about what it felt like when the shoe was on the other foot. If only I’d remembered how hard it is to bear, and given you the cure for that pain at once!
Still, your past mistakes now cancel out mine: you’ve got to let me use the credit I built up in the past.
